Biography
Robert was probably descended from a namesake who had been taxed at Lewes in 1327.1 He was made a feoffee of property there on behalf of William Hore in April 1398, and witnessed a deed in the town for William Chepelond* in March 1408, but his own holdings are not recorded. Bynt was engaged in the local cloth trade, being assessed for alnage on fabric sold in Sussex in 1402, the year of his return to Parliament. He was on good terms with Thomas Harling, canon of Chichester and executor of the will of Thomas, earl of Arundel (d.1415), the lord of Lewes; indeed, in 1423 Harling bequeathed to him his second-best horse with its trappings. Bynt himself died before 1431, by which date his executor, John Gosselyn II*, was suing William Bromelle, a Hampshire woolman, as one of his debtors.2
