Coroner, Cumb. c.1419-20 Oct. 1431.
Biography
William may well have been either the son or nephew of the John Cardoile who was bailiff of Carlisle on at least three occasions between 1391 and 1404, later became mayor, and also served for a minimum of 22 years as coroner of Cumberland. John was, moreover, present at the two elections which saw William’s return to Parliament, and it looks very much as if the latter succeeded him as coroner at some point in, or just after, 1419. Information about office-holders in Carlisle during our period remains incomplete, but enough evidence has survived to show that William discharged 12 terms as bailiff, if not more, and that he was present at ten of the parliamentary elections for the city, generally in his official capacity, but twice, in 1420 and 1421 (May), as a private individual. He also witnessed a number of local deeds; and in May 1434 he was named on the list of Cumbrian gentry who were to take the general oath that they would not support anyone likely to disturb the peace.2
Although he was replaced as coroner in October 1431 because he lacked the necessary qualifications (and thus probably did not own enough property in Cumberland), William remained active for several years. In November 1439 he was pardoned his illegal entry, as a trustee, into the manor of Warwick in Cumberland; and six years later he was included among the 12 leading citizens of Carlisle who henceforth were to assist and direct the mayor in his deliberations.3
