Biography
In 1546 Chapell entered the property of George Gregory of St. Erme near Grampound and with his companions damaged Gregory’s crops, for which Gregory sought redress in the Star Chamber. Gregory’s description of Chapell as ‘well friended with the gentlemen’ of the county and ‘rich and of great substance’ was not without foundation, for his colleagues at Lincoln’s Inn included many Cornishmen and with one at least, Robert Trencreke of Treworgan in St. Erme, he appears to have been close. It was presumably this friendship which accounts for his return for Grampound twice under Mary. He may also have been originally elected there in the autumn of 1554 when George Tadlowe’s name appears over an erasure on the indenture. No trace of Chapell has been found after 1555.2
