Biography
Apart from his return to the last Parliament of Henry VIII’s reign, nothing has come to light about Richard Halfacre. As on the election indenture for Liskeard he is styled ‘gentleman’ he may have been a younger son of the armigerous family settled at Whitstone in the north of Cornwall on the border with Devon, and perhaps a brother of the John Halfacre assessed there for the subsidy in 1547 on goods worth £9. Since Whitstone was in the neighbourhood of the home of (Sir) Richard Grenville I, the sheriff in 1545, Halfacre could have owed his Membership to Grenville: one of the knights of the shire on this occasion, Richard Chamond, who was a cousin of Grenville, also lived not far from Whitstone, and it is possible that he too had a hand in Halfacre’s election.
