Biography
John Newman of St. Ives, whose lands there were valued at £4 in 1571, has been preferred as the 1571 MP to a number of contemporary namesakes because his connexions can explain his return. His customer’s job brought him into touch with the Exchequer, and therefore with the treasurer, the Marquess of Winchester, father of John Paulet, Lord St. John, who, together with James Blount, 6th Lord Mountjoy, was lord of the borough.
