Biography
Thornhill’s father was a London grocer, who acquired most of his lands in Kent from Henry Cheyney between 1569 and 1572, probably by foreclosing on mortgages. Thornhill himself attended an inn of court, was returned to Parliament for Bramber through the intervention of a patron whose name has eluded discovery, made a marriage that brought his family more land in Kent, and died 15 Feb. 1598. He had made his will five days before, and it was proved on the following 20 May by his father, the executor. He left his wife some land, £520 he was owed, her jewels, and household goods, which he asked her to accept in lieu of the £700 a year he was bound to give her. There were bequests to servants and to the poor. Thornhill was buried in the church of St. Lawrence Jewry, London.
