Biography
Marton’s family came from Yorkshire, but in the early eighteenth century his father purchased property in Lancashire, including Capernwray and the advowson of Lancaster. After contesting Lancaster unsuccessfully at a by-election in 1745, he was returned for it unopposed in 1747 as a government supporter. In December 1748 it was reported that he and a friend at the Newton races were ‘stoned at ... and urged to drink the Pretender’s health, but, drew their pistols and made their way through the Jacobite mob.’1 He died 4 Dec. 1758.
