Biography
The Northcotes made a fortune from the clothing trade in the sixteenth century, acquiring Hayne by marriage in the time of Elizabeth.1 Returned unopposed as a Tory for Exeter in 1735 and 1741, Northcote was absent from the division on the Spanish convention, voted against the Government on the place bill, and abstained from the division on the motion for the removal of Walpole in February 1741. In November 1742, unlike his fellow Member for Exeter, Humphrey Sydenham, he accepted instructions from the city chamber to promote a bill for restoring triennial Parliaments and a place bill.2 He died 24 May 1743.
