Biography
Norton Powlett was returned as a Whig for Petersfield on his own interest for nearly thirty years. From 1715 he voted with the Administration in every recorded division. Defeated at Petersfield in 1734, he stood there again in 1741, when the 3rd Duke of Bolton wrote to Sir Robert Walpole: ‘I am convinced that Mr. Norton Powlett will insist upon standing at Petersfield after having been for many years at so great an expense and trouble to support the Whig interest in that town’.1 Again unsuccessful, he died 6 June 1741.
