Biography
Descended from an illegitimate son of the Restoration dramatist, Sedley, whose father stood for Newark unsuccessfully in 1727, belonged to one of the leading Tory families in Nottinghamshire. Returned as a Tory for Nottingham at a contested by-election in May 1747, he was re-elected unopposed at the immediately following general election, but did not stand in 1754, remaining out of Parliament till 1774, when he was again returned for Nottingham. He died 23 Aug. 1778, leaving his property to an illegitimate daughter, who married Henry Venables Vernon, afterwards 3rd Lord Vernon.
