Biography
Grove was a Tory, and had to stand a contest in all his three elections, 1741, 1747, and in 1754, when he received the support of a discontented section of the corporation.1
In 1761 Grove, who wished to retire because of his age, was with reluctance persuaded to stand against the corporation candidate, but the opposition ‘got together a great part of Mr. Grove’s friends before the poll began and kept them drunk till it was over’,2 and Grove withdrew on the last day of the poll.
He died 1 May 1767.
