Biography
Montagu’s grandfather, the 4th Earl, was not displeased with his choice of a wife:
If the fortune had been greater to be sure it would have been better, and more suitable to the situation he will find himself in with regard to his paternal estate when that comes into his possession hereafter ...
I fear his income ... will not allow him to keep a house in London. He says he can be occasionally there at his wife’s father’s house, and that his wish is to live principally in the country ... This in my opinion, is a very prudent scheme, especially if he takes a house in this part of the world, where his future establishment will be, and where he will go on improving his and your interest in the county.1
Soon after his marriage, he was returned on the family interest for Huntingdon. He barely survived the meeting of Parliament, dying ‘after a long illness’, 29 Nov. 1790.2
