Biography
John Rogers stood for the mayoralty of Plymouth in 1728, when passion rose so high that he and the rival candidate, George Treby, drew their swords upon one another. On a tie, he was declared elected by a mandamus from the King’s bench.1 Returned against a government candidate, Charles Vanburgh, in 1739, he was unseated in favour of his opponent and did not stand again. He died 20 Dec. 1773.
